American Samoa is being represented in the 2012 Senior Oceania Wrestling Championships (January 27- 29), with wrestlers from the American Samoa Wrestling Association (ASWA), as well as those who are of Samoan descent and have been training off-island. The championships are taking place in Sydney, Australia, and are the first stage of the Olympic qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games to be held in London, England this summer.



AYFS week #4 confirms Raiders and Chiefs the only undefeated in the league

As of Week #4, the American Youth Football Samoa league records confirm that the Raiders and Chiefs teams are the only two undefeated squads. It will take some time before these two strong football teams will face each other, but because this is a highly competitive season — AYFS officials say it’s still up for grabs, unlike the past lopsided seasons.

As for the Chiefs and the Raiders, they are looking to have a clean record throughout the season, as their main goal is to face someone in the title game.



Heated race for 4th place in HS girls soccer

The fight for the fourth and final playoff race in the ASHSAA Girls varsity soccer competition has heated up with three teams vying for that spot.

The Leone Lions, Tafuna Warriors and Kanana Fou Stallions are 4th, 5th,and 6th, respectively in the standings. They are all tied with six points each and the tiebreaker goes to Leone with —1 differential in goals — 4 for Tafuna and — 5 for the Stallions.



LBJ delivers formal notice— fees go up next week, Feb 6

Without financial aid, payroll will not be met say hospital officials

LBJ Medical Center is forecasting that it will not be able to meet its payroll later next month and therefore the hospital board of directors have informed Gov. Togiola Tulafono of LBJ’s intention to move forward with the fee hike to be implemented Feb. 6.

At yesterday’s Senate session, Senator Galeai Tu’ufuli addressed the membership saying he was very saddened by his name being linked to political campaigning in the Fono, adding that he believes the Senate was shocked to hear this new language used in chamber regarding campaigning.

The Special Olympics of American Samoa, is now looking for Special Olympic athletes to compete in the upcoming games. Yesterday they were set up in front of Samoana High School, looking for these special athletes.

On Saturday, CJ Floor, Jr. once again met up with Priscus Fogagnolo from Australia, (or ‘Spartacus’ as Team American Samoa nicknamed him) in the semi-finals of the Senior Wrestling  Division- 96 kg, which finished with Priscus taking the Gold.

Child Care Program works to raise quality

chilThe American Samoa Childcare Program (ASCP), under the Department of Human and Social Services (DHSS) is getting ready to distribute specially appointed ‘I Care’ packages to all of the authorized childcare facilities in the territory, according to the Assistant Director of the Childcare Division/Special Projects and Community Assistance Division, Louisa F. Te’o Tuiteleleapaga.

Yesterday afternoon, the ASCP/DHSS explained to the Childcare Providers of the territory at the H. Rex Lee Auditorium, the process of receiving their packages.
