American Samoa: Last place on the planet where the New Year is celebrated

While parts of the world have already begun to ring in the new year, others will have to wait. But who has to wait the longest?

The consensus is that American Samoa, Midway Islands/U.S.A. and Niue will be the last places to welcome 2013 based on the currently established time zones. Howland and Baker Islands are technically have the latest times on earth, but are both uninhabited.

House won't vote before midnight on 'cliff' deal

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House will miss the midnight Monday deadline lawmakers set for voting to avoid the "fiscal cliff."

House Republicans notified lawmakers that the chamber will vote Monday evening on other bills. They say that will be their only votes of the day.

President Barack Obama and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Monday they are near a deal to avoid wide-ranging tax increases and spending cuts - the fiscal cliff - that take effect with the new year.

Police investigate fatal shooting of 32-year-old man in Hilo

Hawaii island police have opened a murder investigation after finding the body of a man with gunshot wounds in Hilo Saturday night.

Police were called at about 8:47 p.m. to investigate gunshots near Mooheau Park. Responding officers discovered the body and have identified the victim as Faafetai Fiu, 32, of Hilo.

Police said this morning that the suspect is at large.

American Samoa prepares to ring in New Year 2013

Several residents of Tutuila, especially Poloa residents, are hoping for excellent weather today so they can witness the last sunset of  2012 in preparation to ring in the New Year, which will involve church services and parties.

Since Samoa moved to the other side of the dateline last December, American Samoa is now the last place on earth, along with Niue and a handful of smaller islets in the South Pacific, to witness the last sunset of a year.

Once Bank of Hawaii closes its two branches in American Samoa during the first quarter of 2013, as it has previously announced it will do, ANZ Bank of Australia will be the only bank in the territory.

But the Honolulu Star-Advertiser is reporting that a delegation led by Afimutasi Gus Hannemann, a brother of former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, is talking with other Hawaii banks in hopes of getting someone to establish a presence in American Samoa.
