The battle over the senatorial seat for Manu’a District #2 is now in the hands of Samoan Affairs Secretary Lefiti Pese Atiulagi, who has the responsibility of submitting to the Senate President’s Office the name of the next senator, prior to 12noon on Jan. 3, 2013 when the new Legislature will be sworn in to office.

Immigration Officer Savea Polone is being held in police custody on bail of $20,000 for each of the two criminal cases against him.

Detectives of the Criminal Investigation Division with Department of Public Safety yesterday arrested a crew member of the Lady Naomi on allegations of a sexually related crime, says Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety Leiseau Laumoli.

Laumoli told Samoa News the “rape” incident was reported to the authorities yesterday morning and he cannot comment on the details surrounding the case.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s decision to buck the dying wish of legendary Sen. Daniel Inouye and install his own No. 2, Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz, as the state’s soon-to-be senior senator may be less surprising than it seems.

Abercrombie and Inouye were not allies. In fact, their two-decade relationship in Congress was marked by rifts — most notably over Inouye’s encouragement of a primary challenger to Abercrombie in the 2010 governor’s race. Abercrombie and Schatz were running mates in that same election.
