National Park Service anniversary

Today, Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011 marks the 95th anniversary of the National Park Service, established in 1916 to preserve and protect special areas set aside for all people to enjoy. The National Park System comprises not only national parks, like the National Park of American Samoa, but also monuments, historic sites, recreation areas, battlefields, lakeshores, and riverways. Pola Island shown here in the National Park of American Samoa is a haven for seabirds.

The American Samoa National Olympic Committee held a radiothon on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011 to raise funds to go directly towards the needs of Team American Samoa, while they are competing in the Pacific Games in New Caledonia this coming Aug. 27- Sept. 10.

Samoa News was told by an un-confirmed source that American Samoa has 116 athletes competing in the games; and the President of ASNOC, Ken Tupua, has stated a contingent of 160+ comprising athletes, coaches, officials and guests will be leaving on the charter flight for the games tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 23.

Manu Samoa Arrives

The Manu Samoa contingent arrived at Tafuna International airport Thursday afternoon for the fundraising radiothon, which kicks off this morning at 6 a.m., Friday, August 5, at the Fale Laumei in Utulei. They need to raise more than three million U.S. dollars to finance their activities during their five-week campaign for the Rugby World Cup tournament in New Zealand. The governor has asked the community to “give joyfully and freely to Manu Samoa” for they are “not only Samoa’s team but… also American Samoa’s team.” [photo: TA]

Samoa based referee Ponifasio Vasa (far right, seated, with ula) and to his right, Rev. Asiata Fouvale and wife Simoa, are surrounded by members of the Matu’u/Faganeanea CCCAS youth group during a Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 evening dinner held for Vasa, who was released last Friday from LBJ hospital after being injured while refereeing. Once the doctor gives the green light, Vasa will be able to return to Samoa.

‘International Food Night’ held on the first Friday of every month at the Fagatogo Market continues showcasing foods from different communities here in the territory featuring mouthwatering dishes from the Tongan, Fijian, Filipino and Mexican communities. Dubbed 'First Friday,' you'll find a wide array of ethnic foods and fresh produce, plus entertainment, crafts and something different every month. Pictured is part of the Fijian menu, which included chicken curry and chutney, and of course served up with a ‘smile’.

Solaita promoted to Captain

1st LT. Laupati Solaita was promoted to Captain in the United States Army at Camp Parks in Dublin, California, this past Saturday, August 13, 2011. Due to the untimely passing of his father Peni Ben Solaita in January of this year, Laupati's inlaw's pinned his Captain's Rank.



Sgt. Eka re-enlists

Sgt. Lance E. Eka with his wife, Marie, and Capt. Maryjane Porter, following Sgt. Eka's re-enlistment ceremony recently at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Tafuna, American Samoa.

Eka, a combat veteran and mechanic with the Forward Support Company, 411th Engineer Battalion, joined the military in 2001 and looks forward to another six years of Army Strong commitment with the Pride of the Pacific.

Mrs. Eka was also recognized and received a Certificate of Appreciation for her continued support of her husband's unit missions and career plans.



CSM Tobin named Senior Enlisted Advisor for CAAT Afghanistan

Command Sergeant Major Charles Tobin will be relinquishing his post at Ft. Bragg, N.C. as the 528th Sustainment Brigade (Special Operations) (Airborne) Command Sergeant Major at the end of the month as he prepares to take over new duties in Afghanistan. He has been named the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Counterinsurgency Advisory and Assistance Team (CAAT) throughout Afghanistan.
