The village of Poloa will be the last place on earth to bid farewell to the sunset of this year, and all years thereafter, now that Samoa will be jumping to the other side of the International Dateline. This week, Samoa will go from Dec. 29 to Dec. 31 missing out on an entire day to make the change.

Samoa’s village of Falealupo has had the designation of the last place to see the sunset in the world.

As of yesterday morning no specific details were available, as to whether or not Poloa will hold a ceremony to mark this historic occasion.

In a five-page order dated Dec. 21 the High Court denied the motion by former police officer Raymond Noa for a new trial and for reduction of sentence.  He was accused of assaulting another man in front of the now closed Rubbles Tavern in Nu’uuli.

Due to further improvement in ASG’s revenue collections, Gov. Togiola Tulafono says he has directed the Treasury Department to pay the remainder of the ASG subsidy to the LBJ Medical Center for the first quarter of fiscal year 2012.

2LT Mike Gabbard, son of MSG Bill and Mary Lynn Gabbard of Annapolis, MD, recently graduated from the US Army Ranger School, Ft Benning GA. Mike is a 2011 graduate of Towson University. In the spring of 2012 he will be assigned to 3rd Infantry Division, Ft Stewart, GA.

Mike is the grandson of the late Ben and Agnes Gabbard of Leloaloa.

DISTRICT COURT ROUNDUP

The District Court yesterday was crowded with families and friends of individuals who were taken into custody during the Christmas weekend road block for violating local laws such as those governing public and private peace disturbance, driving while under the influence of alcohol and underage drinking.

Many of the 24 individuals who made their initial court appearance yesterday were released pending another court hearing and were ordered by the court not to violate any law while their case is pending in court.

The Coast Guard and Navy are still searching for a sailor from Seattle who went missing on a sail amid the Hawaiian islands earlier this month.

Ira Foreman, 66, left Port Allen on the island of Kauai on Dec. 17 and was expected arrive on Oahu a day later, a spokesman with the U.S. Coast Guard said. But Foreman's wife called the Coast Guard on Dec. 24 to report he was missing.

She told the Coast Guard her husband was sailing from American Samoa to Oahu, but mistakenly ended up in Port Allen. Foreman remained anchored there before leaving for Oahu on the 17th.
