Illegal transfer of $1.2 mil to Viet Nam still to be resolved

Local and federal officials are working collaboratively with the government of Vietnam for the return to ASG of the $1.2 million that was fraudulently transferred out of an ASG account at the Bank of Hawai'i to the Vietnam International Bank, where the money is now frozen.

This case is being investigated jointly by the Federal Bureau of Investigation - who dispatched an agent to Hanoi - and Interpol Vietnam, as well as the Vietnamese government.



ASG's lengthy hiring process draws lots of complaints

The Department of Legal Affairs, which has been faced with a long standing problem of shortage of criminal attorneys, has described the government's hiring process as "tedious and counter-productive" and it appears that individual cases for hiring "have been purposely delayed."

Legal Affairs' observation was made in its fourth quarter performance report for fiscal year 2011 as one of the program impediments the agency faced. The Department of Public Works in its 4th quarter performance report also cited concerns with the hiring process which "takes a very long time".



Detained NZ vessel now in legal battle with USDOJ

The U.S. Justice Department is in litigation with the owner of a New Zealand based fishing vessel, detained in American Samoa since this summer for alleged violation of federal and international marine pollution laws, says a U.S. Coast Guard official.
