There is confusion over the latest development in the dispute between Magiagi and the Government over electricity meters.

According to the Office of the Press Secretariat, Electric Power Corporation (EPC) workers and technicians from sub-contractor McClean’s Electrical moved in yesterday morning to install cash power meters.

The installation, which follows a meeting between Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi and Magiagi on Thursday evening, appears to signal the end of the longstanding dispute.

Fire on Sanford vessel in Auckland

Ten fire trucks are dealing with a blaze on board an 80-metre long Sanford fishing vessel docked at Auckland's Wynyard Quarter.

The fire, which started around 10.45am, is under the deck of the tuna vessel San Nikunau.

A Fire Service spokesman says it is not known how the blaze started.

Sanford was last week found guilty on six of seven counts relating to failure to properly maintain the San Nikunau's oil record book and the obstruction of port state control inspections by the US Coast Guard.

AP-GfK poll: Raise taxes to save Social Security

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Most Americans say go ahead and raise taxes if it will save Social Security benefits for future generations. And raise the retirement age, if you have to.

Both options are preferable to cutting monthly benefits, even for people who are years away from applying for them.

Those are the findings of a new Associated Press-GfK poll on public attitudes toward the nation's largest federal program.

The governor’s Executive Order to stop the importation of vehicles into the territory of particular years, because of the government’s commitment to fight global climate change is at the center of a complaint filed in court against the American Samoa Government for a declaratory judgment and for unlawful seizure of a vehicle.

Fed court orders Nauer to self surrender on Sunday

Former Department of Education bus division supervisor Gustav Nauer, sentenced in June for his role in the spare parts scheme, will start serving his jail term tomorrow at the federal detention center in Honolulu.

Nauer was to start his jail term last weekend “at a designated federal detention center” however, a court order signed by U.S. District Court Judge David Alan Ezra Aug. 15, allowed him is to self surrender no later than 10 a.m. Aug. 26 (tomorrow) at the federal penitentiary in Honolulu.

ASG institutes new purchasing guidelines

New ASG guidelines for purchasing appliances and electronic devices were issued by executive order on Aug 21, 2012 accompanied by a separate memo.

Effective immediately, all ASG purchases of appliances and electronic devices shall require a US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) “Energy Star” approval.



Visit set for Australian travel wholesalers and media reps

Australian travel wholesalers and journalists will be in the territory from Sept. 14 – 16 as part of a familiarization visit being organized by the American Samoa Visitor’s Bureau announced executive director David Vaeafe.

Visiting wholesalers David Callan (Wotif.com) and Mrs. Angela Stewart (Parker Travel Collection) will be accompanied by Ms. Dasha Toalepaialii from the Flight Centre Travel Group and will conduct site visits of hotels, take a tour with a local operator and meet industry members, said Vaeafe.
