There are eight confirmed typhoid fever cases in the territory, according to LBJ hospital Pediatrician Dr. Mike Favazza during a press conference called by the Department of Health yesterday. The press conference was led by DOH Director Motusa Tuileama Nua, who noted the recent cases of typhoid are a concern that needs to be addressed and the public should be informed.

American Samoa is ranked 10th among the coastal states and territories in safeguarding its marine resources, according to a recently released study conducted by the Marine Conservation Institution and Mission Blue  - both based in the U.S.
 
The two organizations say that the 2013 report  is the “first-ever quantitive, scientifically rigorous national ranking of states’ protection of their ocean waters.”
 

American Samoa will be preparing for Father’s Day 2013 which will include special church programs throughout the territory tomorrow, performed by fathers and for fathers, and will include skits about Bible stories and singing. 
 

The National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa's (NMSAS) Sanctuary Advisory Council(SAC) has established a Tourism & Recreation Working Group, with its first public meeting set for next week.
 
Sanctuary officials say the working group is to provide a forum to develop and guide eco-place opportunities and programs at some of the sanctuary sites.
 

HONOLULU (AP) — The husband of a former Delta Air Lines employee who admitted using her security credentials to smuggle drug money has also pleaded guilty to his role in a meth trafficking ring that operated between California and Hawaii.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Loo said Fale­fia Fua­matu pleaded guilty Friday to a conspiracy charge involving distribution and possession of meth­am­pheta­mine. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 16.

According to an indictment, he flew from Hono­lulu to Los Angeles at least twice to deliver nearly $1 million in drug proceeds.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) -- Google is launching Internet-beaming antennas into the stratosphere aboard giant, jellyfish-shaped balloons with the lofty goal of getting the entire planet online.

Eighteen months in the works, the top-secret project was announced Saturday in New Zealand, where up to 50 volunteer households are already beginning to receive the Internet briefly on their home computers via translucent helium balloons that sail by on the wind 12 miles above Earth.

A former spy boss says New Zealand is a democratic and free country because of our relationship with the United States and other large powers.

Former GCSB boss Air Marshal Sir Bruce Ferguson said the sacrifice made to enjoy the relationship was small - even though New Zealand was extremely unlikely to suffer a terrorist incident like the September 11, 2001 attacks.

"We are a democratic, free country because of others, not because of us. That's the way it is when you're a small country."

The editor of a Tongan newspaper says he is not intimidated after damages were awarded against him for defaming the Prime Minister.

Lord Tuivakano and six cabinet ministers brought the claim against the Kele’a newspaper after a letter to the editor published in October 2012 accused some parliamentarians of being above the law.

The editor of Kele’a, Mateni Tapueluelu, says he is sure the High Court will overturn the decision on appeal, saying the action against the paper was an attempt to distract the courts and the public from the issue of criminal accusations the MPs are facing.
