American Samoa’s population has relatively more old people and relatively fewer young people than 30 years ago, as the trend in the territory has consistently resulted in fewer youth and more middle-aged and elderly.

In 1980, 53% of the population was under 20 years old, but in 2010, those 0-19 year olds comprised only 46% of the population.

If there are fewer youth, which age group grew? It wasn’t 20-35 year olds. Just like the young people, their percentage in the population also fell, from 26% in 1990 to 19% in 2010.

Congressman Faleomavaega Eni confirmed his plans to file an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief, in the citizenship lawsuit before the federal court in Washington D.C. where the lead plaintiff in the suit is Leneuoti F. Tuaua, a local resident joined by five individuals and a Samoan organization based in California.

Named as defendants in the suit filed July this year, are Hillary Rodham Clinton, in her capacity as U.S. Secretary of State, the State Department, and Janice L. Jacobs, in her official capacity as Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs.

FA’AFETAI KASIANO ENTERS GUILTY PLEA

A man who was accused of attempting to break in to a store in Kokoland, has entered into a plea agreement with the government. The government initially charged Fa’afetai Kasiano with attempted burglary in the first degree, property damage in the second degree and public peace disturbance, however in a plea deal with the government, the defendant pleaded guilty to property damage and public peace disturbance, while the more serious charge of attempted burglary, was dismissed.

The US Coast Guard, last week in Honolulu, presented the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council with an overview of the new federal safety examination requirements for commercial fishing vessels. USCG Fisheries Enforcement Specialist Charlie Medlicott said the Coast Guard recognizes that these safety requirements may be inappropriate for small vessels fishing in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).

A law giving Solomon Islands' men the right to rape their wives has been struck down by the High Court in the Pacific archipelago, the Solomons Star reports.

The law said men had an implied and irrevocable consent to sexual intercourse through the contract of marriage and were allowed to obtain sex by force.

In a ruling out this week, the High Court says the law cannot stand and declared that the notion that wives were subservient to the husband "must be confined to the graves".
