The acting managing director of the Samoa Water Authority, Ekiumeni Fauolo, says everyone in the country has to work together to conserve water.

While it is now the rainy season a prolonged dry spell has left the country’s water catchments dry.

Mr Fauolo says the Authority is trying to raise more awareness of conservation measures within the community.

He says catchment areas also need improved protection with more use made of re-afforestation.

Tri-Marine will soon begin transforming the former Samoa Packing in Atu’u into a new 21st century tuna processing facility.

The Atu’u location has housed a tuna plant since 1949, when Island Packers began operation. (The accompanying photo, taken sometime between 1949 and 1954, is on display at the Jean P. Haydon Museum. It depicts the original Island Packers plant — with the name shown on the roof of one building.)

Local Department of Homeland Security says work began Monday this week to upgrade the port security equipment and facilities at the Department of Port Administration.

The upgrade includes improvements to surveillance cameras and public announcement capabilities, as well as to upgrade communication equipment and properly equip port staff and security personnel in support of the department’s day-to-day operations and emergency response capabilities.

Construction of the new Development Bank headquarters has been temporarily interrupted due to the need to reroute an ASPA water main that is presently located underneath the new building’s “footprint”.

DBAS Acting President Jason Betham said the water main will be relocated by ASPA and its contractor, Paramount Construction, who will then resume its work on the building.

A bus accident in Samoa has killed two people including the driver and a 17 year old girl, and injured more then twenty people.

The bus was taking a Sunday school of over thirty people for a picnic when the accident happened on a road at Sama’i village in Falelatai District.

A senior nurse at Leulumoega District hospital says six people are seriously injured but stable the rest were treated and discharged.

Meanwhile the assistant police commissioner, Leaupepe Fatu Pula, says speeding is suspected to be the course of the accident when the driver has lost control of the vehicle.

PAUL SOLOFA’S FED CASE MENTIONED IN CONGRESSIONAL REPORT

The federal government’s cases against former Department of Education official Paul Solofa and former ASDOE school bus supervisor Gustav Nauer are among the incidents involving criminal investigations by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Inspector General included in the USDOE-OIG semiannual report to the U.S. Congress.
