2013 Flag Day Week Events

WEDNESDAY

2013 Flag Day Fautasi Race is still slated to begin early morning, 7 a.m., however the course has been changed due to weather conditions. The beginning line will now be inside the harbor, fronting ASCO Motors. The fautasi will go pass the mouth of the harbor and turn around, and head back to the Finish Line, which will be the starting line.

Samoa News understands the ‘new’ race course could change again, if the weather improves and advises the public to stay tuned to local radio stations to get the update.___

The official Flag Day program also gets underway this morning after the Fautasi race. (Read story below for details.)

THURSDAY

Celebrity Chef Sam Choy from Hawai’i  is back in town during the 2013 Flag Day celebrations. He was picking vegetables and fruits yesterday to prepare for a one-day cook out to be held Thursday at the Department of Agriculture in Tafuna. He will be assisted by (left) DOA Director Lealao Melila Purcell and (right) Deputy Director Peter Gurr throughout his stay here in American Samoa.

Purcell told Samoa News that the public is invited to come and check out Choy’s dishes; the event will start at 10:00 am tomorrow morning. Choy will be making dishes using local fruits and vegetables, including how to make jam.

In 2010, Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) held a workshop at ASCC, which resulted in the short film "O a'u o le Taupou", one of the titles which will be featured at the ASCC Fine Arts Department Film Festival this Thursday, April 19th. The all-day festival of Samoa-and-Pacific-related films will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. The public is welcome to come and enjoy the lineup of free screenings, which will consist of a mixture of local and regional works along with a selection from PIC, a Hawai’i-based funding and artistic development resource organization that serves fledgling filmmakers in the American Pacific.
