2012 Oceania U19s Championship schedule launched

The Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions (FORU) has announced the Tournament Schedule for the 2012 Oceania U19s Championship to be staged in Apia, Samoa, between 26 November and 6 December 2012.

The 2012 Oceania U19s Championship, to be contested by Samoa, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, American Samoa, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, not only determines the Oceania U19s Champion, but also allows for players and coaches to gauge their standard and stage of development amongst other regional teams.

"We are extremely excited to be given another opportunity by FORU to host this year’s Oceania U19s Championship. The prospect of witnessing six regional teams in action at Apia Park will be an immense source of excitement for the Rugby loving people of Samoa” said CEO of the Samoa Rugby Union (SRU), Fred Amoa.

"Hosting this year's Oceania U19s Championship in Apia will therefore be just reward to the Rugby faithful in Samoa, who have always enjoyed and supported rugby, and we look forward to delivering a professional event, worthy of the teams and athletes we will host."

The Oceania U19s Championship is not just a rugby tournament that delivers high level competition for aspiring young players. It is a Tournament with a strong Legacy Program linked to it – one that is designed to create a lasting benefit not only for players but for the rugby community and the broader local population of the Host Union.

Through the Oceania U19s Championship Legacy Program, FORU and the SRU are partnering with the Pacific in Union Program (PiU). The PiU Program is a tripartite between the IRB, the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Rugby Union whereby the youth of selected FORU Unions learn the rugby values of respect, sportsmanship, teamwork and discipline through the Rugby4Schools mass participation program. These outcomes are delivered through rugby-themed activities in the classroom, on the field and at Festivals.

During the Oceania U19s Championship there will be various activities conducted to assist in facilitating awareness, and the various outcomes of the program through the festival of rugby.

The 2012 Oceania U19s Championship kicks off with the first of three triple headers at Apia Park on 26 November and culminates with the finals on 6 December.

Samoa are the 2010 Champions and will be looking to defend their title.
