“Spherecast” today to commemorate 50th anniversary of Great Alaska Tsunami

Today at 9 a.m., a special presentation or “Spherecast” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Great Alaska Earthquake and Tsunami will be delivered via the Science on a Sphere (SOS) in the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center’s Rotunda Room.

The public is invited to attend this free event.

“Tsunami, Waves of Destruction: 50 Years of Lessons Learned” is being presented by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for everyone interested in tsunami science and impacts.

The hour-long session will broadcast live from Honolulu, Hawai’i and will be presented by Dr. Gerard Fryer and Dr. Nathan Becker of the NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, Leon Geschwind and Matthew McBride of the NOAA Pacific Services Center, and Jeanne Johnston — a 1946 tsunami survivor.

During the 2nd media coffee chat held at the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center yesterday morning, Marine Operations Coordinator for the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa, Lt. Charlene Felkley told Samoa News that every NOAA agency on island has been invited to attend, including representatives from the National Park Service of American Samoa, the Dept. of Marine and Wildlife Resources, the local weather station, and the Dept. of Commerce.

MSAS Communications/Outreach Coordinator Isabel Gaoteote explained that American Samoa is mentioned in the presentation, based on data from the Sept. 29, 2009 earthquake and tsunami that claimed the lives of 34 local residents.

“Information will be presented using Science On a Sphere, a six-foot diameter globe that shows full-color animated satellite-based imagery of hundreds of data sets including weather, climate change, and tsunami data,” Lt. Felkley pointed out.
