“COMMENTING ON THE NEWS, WITH TWO CONCERNS”

Dear Editor,

I have two concerns...

1) Thank you for the Op-Ed by ASCC Instructor M.V. Matuu regarding why English should be the primary language of instruction for K-6.  It was very informative and written with a lot of knowledge, insight and research.  My hope is that the governor and DOE take heed and give serious consideration to the information.

2) I was very sad to read the article about the young father who, not purposely, but through his own negligence suffered the loss of his child in a traffic incident two years ago. This man has suffered so much.  I'm sure not a day goes by when this young man doesn't regret that tragic day.  How will allowing him to keep his job as a fireman hurt anybody?  The humane thing to do is to help this man to build his life back up.

In the article, ASCA Title VII, Chpt. 08, Sect. 7.0801 was quoted saying... "employees in career service MAY be demoted, suspended, or removed for... conviction of a crime …"  The key word here is MAY. May means a choice to act or not.  Let's show some mercy and grace and on this young man.  Isn't he suffering enough?  A fireman is an honorable job.  Every time they fight a fire, they are risking their lives.
